State’s Attorney Recognizes Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx honored three Chicagoans for their professional and personal contributions to the Asian community during a recent ceremony held in commemoration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

The Honorable Geraldine D’Souza, Associate Judge, Municipal Division, Circuit Court of Cook County; Commander Stephen Chung, Chicago Police Department; and Anne Shaw, Esq., founding officer of Shaw Legal Services, received the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Community Service Award during the ceremony.

Cook County Judge Geraldine D’Souza was appointed a Cook County Judge in May 2016. She is currently assigned to the 6th Municipal District in Markham where she hears domestic violence cases. Prior to joining the bench, Judge D’Souza was a Cook County prosecutor for 22 years. She maintains active membership in several legal associations, including the Illinois State Bar Association, where she is the Vice Chairman of the Criminal Justice Section Council. Judge D’Souza gives back to the community through her charitable work with Catholic Charities and other organizations.

Chicago Police Department Commander Stephen Chung, 9th District, is the first Asian American officer appointed to this post. A veteran officer, Commander Chung has served the Chicago Police for nearly 20 years, working in the Bureau of Patrol, Bureau of Detectives and the training division. He has been recognized with the Department’s Award of Valor. Commander Chung is focused on building a proactive and positive relationship between the diverse residents in the district and officers to increase trust and safety in the community.

Attorney Anne Shaw, founding officer of Shaw Legal Services, Ltd., actively serves the community with her legal expertise and civic leadership. Her law firm focuses on civil litigation and Ms. Shaw was instrumental in establishing the Chinatown Pro Bono Legal Clinic. She currently serves on the board of the American Civil Liberties Union Illinois and has been recognized for her numerous contributions to the community.

At the ceremony, Jacqueline Simon of Loyola University School of Law received a scholarship award for an internship in the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Awards were held on Tuesday, May 30, at the New Furama Restaurant in Chicago.
