Statement from Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx

“I am aware of recent editorials and commentaries urging the State’s Attorney’s Office to comment further on the circumstances surrounding the Jussie Smollett case.

I want the public to know that I am committed to assuring a transparent review of how this office functioned in the Smollett case.  I believe that the most reliable and effective way to accomplish that review is to enlist the assistance of the Cook County Office of the Independent Inspector General, that Mr. Blanchard has agreed to perform that review. 

As we move forward in this process, we understand the public’s urgency to be made aware of relevant facts. However, what is most paramount is how accurately the facts are gathered. The best way to ensure that the inspector general is provided reliable and accurate records and recollections is to give him the first opportunity to speak with all relevant participants in the case.  Those discussions should not be held against a backdrop of public comments or speculation from me or my office about what people did or said.

Therefore, while the OIIG review is underway, I do not intend to comment publicly on the Smollett case. When the OIIG has concluded his review, he will release a report of his findings and conclusions. At that time, it will be appropriate for me to comment publicly about these topics.  My goal is to promote an accurate review by the OIIG, followed by a candid conversation with the people of Cook County about the findings of the review.”
