Cook County State's Attorney Foxx Recognizes National Consumer Protection Week
CHICAGO - In recognition of National Consumer Protection Week (March 3 - 9, 2019), Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx highlights services provided by the office’s Consumer Fraud Unit, who prosecute violations of Illinois consumer protection laws in Cook County.
“The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office operates a Consumer Fraud Unit for the benefit of consumers who are victimized by unscrupulous persons and businesses,” State’s Attorney Foxx said. “If you are a victim of fraud, the Consumer Fraud Unit may be able to help you recover your losses, prosecute the person or business responsible for the fraud, and prevent other members of the public from falling victim to the same scheme.”
The unit is staffed by specialists who handle inquiries regarding home repair fraud, identity theft, and travel scams. In the last few years, the unit has experienced an increase in complaints and inquiries about mortgage rescue and loan modification scams. The services of the Consumer Fraud Unit are free.
The Consumer Fraud Unit also provides a dedicated Immigration Services Fraud hotline at 312-603-8678 for complaints about immigration fraud. All calls to the hotline are confidential and federal immigration authorities will not be contacted.
